D’var Torah Shemini

D’var Torah Shemini

On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron, his sons and the elders of Israel. (Leviticus 9:1)
That day (on which the Tabernacle was dedicated) was as joyful to the Holy One, Blessed be He, as the day on which heaven and earth were created. (Babylonian Talmud, Megilla 10b
Thus our Sages comment on the opening verse of our parasha, which describes the dedication of the Mishkan.
Not surprisingly, our Sages have a similar comment concerning King Solomon’s dedication of the First Temple:
Once King Solomon came and built the Temple, the Holy One, Blessed be He, said “now the work of heaven is completed” (shalma, a play on words with Sh'lomo = Solomon). [Yalkut Shimoni, I Kings 186]
My father explained that with the dedication of the Tabernacle/Temple the material world was endowed with a spiritual aspect as well. In essence, the world received its soul when the Temple was dedicated. All of God’s creation is a combination of the material and the spiritual. Ultimately, it is Man’s responsibility to infuse the mundane with holiness, to bring forth the spiritual point hidden within the material. With the completion of the Temple, spirit and matter became intertwined. Thus, the Temple’s dedication marks the beginning of the fulfillment of the destiny of the pinnacle of God’s creation: Mankind. (David Magence)
